يضم هذا الكتاب أعمال ندوة موسعة عقدت في منتدى عبد الحميد شومان الثقافي في الفترة الممتدة من الثامن إلى التاسع من شهر تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر سنة 2000، بعنوان "التعليم الجامعي في الأردن بين الواقع والطموح"، وتمّ فيها بحث عدد من أبرز القضايا المتصلة بواقع التعليم العالي وسبل تطويره في محاولة للتغلب على معوقاته، وقد جرت مراجعة شاملة لهذا القطاع الرئيسي في الحياة المعاصرة بالاستئناس بعدد من التجارب العربية في هذا المجال، وخصوصاً في كل من مصر وسوريا ولبنان وتونس وفلسطين والخليج العربي.
وقد شاركت في جلسات هذه الندوة نخبة من المختصين في شؤون التعليم الجامعي ممن خبروا مراحله المختلفة من الأردن، وفي عدد من الأقطار العربية وأسهموا في تطويره على مدى العقود الماضية. وعالجت الندوة التي توزعت على ثماني جلسات أبرز المواضيع المتصلة بحاضر التعليم الجامعي ومستقبله متخذة من الأردن نموذجاً أساسياً ضمن الإطار العربي العام.
