"أغلقت الباب وعادت إلى مطبخها وهي تفكر بمصيبتها لكنها بين لحظة وأخرى تنفض رأسها وتقنع ذاتها بأنها رغم هذه الحياة الصعبة تشعر معه بالسعادة، تؤكد هذا الوهم لأنها لا تملك حلاً آخر. فهي ليست على استعداد لتركه لأنها تكرر دائماً أن القلب لا يجيد الرقص إلا مرة واحدة، وعندما رقص لأنغام عبد الله في العربة-رغم عدم تشابهها مع أنغام الناس الذين تعرفهم-أدركت حينها أنها أحبته رغم شذوذه في حياته عن المجتمع ككل. فهي لم تسمع قبله بإنسان ينتظر الآتي من أجل أن يكتبه. وهذا الانتظار، كما ذكر لها، بدأ منذ من أكثر من عشر أعوام يوم أن التقته. ولم تسمع بآخر ترك أهله من أجل أن يتفرغ للقراءة أو سعى لتجميده للهروب من الوظيفة أو سجن من أجل قضية لا يعرف ماهيتها".
في الرواية استدعاءات تأخذنا إلى البعيد... إلى ذواتنا في لحظات انتظار وهم قادم من فسحات الأمل، وعندما يأتي ذاك الوهم ساعتها تأخذنا كل الدهشة على حين غرة.
