المثل هو خلاصة تجارب من سبقونا، فلو تقصينا التاريخ وطالعنا أقوال الحكماء، لتبين لنا أن الحكمة التي يتضمنها المثل هي قائد أمين للعقل، من امتلكها كانت له نورا ساطعا لا يغرب وامتلك كمال الفطنة، قال ابن المقفع "إذا جعل الكلام مثلا، كان أوضح للمنطق وأنقى للسمع، وأوسع لشعب الحديث".
ومن المعروف أن لكل شعب "أمثالا" تدور على ألسنة أبنائه، وقد تتشابه "أمثلة" شعب "بأمثلة" شعب آخر. ولكن تبقى هناك "أمثلة" ينفرد بها قوم دون غيرهم.
واليوم إذ نقدم لأبناء الضاد كتاب "الأمثال في العراق القديم" فإننا نضع بين أيديهم عصارة الفكر العراقي القديم، الذي صاغه أبناؤه بهيئة "الأمثال والحكم" التي نستطيع القول بل الجزم - إن صح التعبير - بأنها أقدم ما وضعه البشر من الحكمة، نضوجا وشمولا وغاية مع إصابة الهدف، وإن دل هذا على شيىء إنما يدل على رقي الفكر الإنساني في حضارة وادي الرافدين بما فيه: السومري والأكدي البابلي، والآشوري وصولا إلى الآراميين والعرب.
