تدور أحداث هذه الرواية في مدينة "لوس بادرا" الأمريكية وتصور لنا أحوال المتشردين والمتسولين الذين لا مكان لهم في المجتمع. والقصة عبارة عن علاقة حب بين رجل وامرأة تخفى كل منهما في زي متسول حتى يكتشفا عن قرب المشاكل التي يعانيها المتشردون في الطرقات، وتصر الفتاة على إبعاد شبح الحب من حياتها وتهرب من حبيبها عدة مرات ولكنها تعلم من النهاية أن لا شيء يساوي الحب والزواج، وأن الطموحات الشخصية يمكن أن يحققها الإنسان ما دام كان سعيداً في حياته الشخصية وأن الزواج لا يعوق تنفيذ الأحلام، بل على العكس هو يعضدها ويشجع الإنسان على ذلك ما دام مستقراً.
