اختيرت هاتان المجموعتان من القصص القصيرة من بين خمس مجموعات قصصية أتيحت لدار بنغوين بوكس للنشر من قبل دار ماكميلان أند كو ليمتد، وهي: "نقليات وإكتشافات" (1904، "أفعال وردود أفعال" (1909)، "تنوع في المخلوقات" (1917)، "المدينون والدائنون" (1926) و"حدود وتجديدات" (2391).
وتشكل هذه المجموعات أفضل أعمال كيبلينغ القصصية النثرية بعد عام (1900)، وذلك بمعزل عن "كيم" (1901) والقصص القصيرة التي جمعت في الكتاب المسمى "بك من بوكس هيل" (1906) و"مكافآت وجنّيات" (1901).
إن قصص كيبلينغ مزيج غني من الإبتكار مع التجربة، تجربته أو تجارب الآخرين، كما توحي سيرته الذاتية التي عنوانها "شيْ ما عن نفسي" (1937) بأصول كثير من هذه الحكايات.
فقصتا "حرب أصحاب" و"الأسير" مستمدتان كلتاهما عن معرفته المباشرة بالممارسات البريطانية والبوبرية في جنوب أفريقيا، أما "الثعالب الصغيرة" فقد بناها على نادرة رواها له ضابط كان مشرفاً على "حملة صيد جيحون" الأصلية، وبنى "ريغولوس" على ذكرياته من أيام المدرسة في "وستورد هو".
وكانت فتاة حانة رآها في أوكلاند وملاحظات من ضابط صف سفينة تنصت عليه في قطار قرب "كيب تاون" هي نقاط الإنطلاق لقصة "السيدة باتهيرست"، أما إهتمامه بحركة "الماسونيين الأحرار" (قصة "حول مصالح الأخوة") فيعود تاريخه إلى إنضمامه إلى "لودج" متعددة الأجناس والأديان في لاهور في عام (1885).
وفي منزل في "توركاي"، الذي سكنت فيه سابقاً ثلاث عوانس عجائز، أحس هو وزوجته في عام (1896) بــ"كآبة متنامية أحاطت بنا كلينا: سواد متراكم في الذهن وأسى في القلب"، وقد عزا ذلك إلى "روح" المنزل نفسه، وأعاد خلق الأعراض التي أصابت شخصياته في قصة "جرّاح المنزل"، بينما قدمت تجاربه في "بيتمان"، وهو اسم منزلهما في ساسكس، تقنيات قصة "تحت سدّ المطحنة" وكذلك تبصّراته في الحياة والشؤون الريفية واستمدّ منها قصصاً مثل "نهر ودود" و"كنّتي" و"سكنى مفروضة بالقوة".
تقدم هذه المختارات من خمسة من الكتب التي خلفها كيبلينغ، تقدم كيبلينغ القرن العشرين الذي تطور من الأعجوبة الأكثر إلفة التي عرفتها الثمانينات والتسعينات [من القرن التاسع عشر]، كما أنها توضح المدى والتنوع والأصالة التقنية لفنه القصصي لتلك الفترة.
