غرض هذا الكتاب تعريف القراء بمفكر إسماعيلي وكاتب كبير من زمن الإمام-الخليفة الفاطمى، الحاكم بأمر الله، الذي حكم من سنة 996/386 وحتى سنة 1021/411. كان حميد الدين أبو الحسن أحمد بن عبد الله الكرماني، إذا ما استخدمنا اسمه كاملاً، شخصية هامة في الدعوة (أداة التعليم والدعاية في الحركة الإسماعيلية) من تلك الحقبة بحيث يستحق الاعتراف به لوحده لدعمه لإمامه ودفاعه عنه. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، يبقى الكرماني، على كل حال، ممن امتلكوا ذهناً نظرياً ذا عبقرية عميقة ساعدته في آن معاً على الفهم الكامل لأفضل الأعمال الفلسفية والعلمية العربية في زمنه، وصياغة مبادئها بطريقة جعلتها مفهومة من ناحية تعاليم الدعوة. وبعد كتابة الكثير من الكتب والرسائل التي تضمّنت مزجاً مبهراً بين الدين والفلسفة، اختفى أخيراً ولم يعد يذكر إلا من خلال هذه الكتب فقط.
