ولد كلود سيمون عام 1913 لأبوين فرنسيين في تناناريف في مدغشقر، تعلم في فرنسا وبدأ الكتابة في الأربعينات بعد مرحلة تعلم للرسم، وقد ترك هذا التدريب أثراً في أدب سيمون الذي يقول: "أكتب كتبي كما تصنع لوحة، وكل لوحة تأليف قبل كل شيء".
عاش سيمون عدة أحداث هامة في زمانه "فقد كان في أسبانيا إبان الحرب الأهلية الأسبانية وخدم في بداية الحرب العالمية الثانية في لواء فرسان وأسر عام 1940 وهرب من الأسر في العام نفسه، وهذان الحدثان أساسيان في روايتنا هذه.
وينتمي سيمون إلى مجموعة الرواية الحديثة التي كان من أعلامها "آلان روب - غرييه وناتالي ساروت ومرغريت دوراً وميشيل بوتور وجان ريكاردو.
وتمثل الرواية الجديدة رفضاً للتقليد الواقعي للقرن التاسع عشر ولتمثيل سياق تاريخي وإجتماعي في النص الروائي الذي يخلق واقعه بنفسه.
والرواية الجديدة التي ترفض التأثير على القارئ تجعله شريكاً فعالاً عبر فعل القراءة.
ويتميز كلود سيمون بتقنية روائية خاصة وأصيلة استحق جائزة نوبل عام 1985.
