الصراع بين الفلسفة والدين ليس عاماً أو مطلقاً؛ فلا الفلسفات كلها رافضة أو ملحدة، ولا الدين اتخذ من الفلسفات كلها موقفاً سلبياً. ولقد كان يشتد الصراع بينهما أحياناً لدرجة إلغاء بعضهما البعض، فقامت فلسفات مادية أو ملحدة لا تعترف بالدين ولا بالإلهيات، كما ظهر متدينون وفرق دينية كفّرت الفلاسفة والعلماء، فلاحقتهم وأصدرت بحقهم أحكاماً بالموت. إلا أنه، وفي أحيان كثيرة، تكاملت الفلسفة مع الدين، وتكامل معه العلم أيضاً، فكانت هناك فلسفات مؤمنة، جهدت في تركيز المعطيات الدينية على أسس العقل وقواعد المنطق، دفاعاً عن العقيدة وحفظاً للتعاليم. كما ارتفع بالمقابل صوت المتدينين أيضاً، عالياً، بالقول، أن لا دين لمن لا عقل له.
ضمن هذه المقاربة تدور في هذا الكتاب معالجة مشكلة الصراع بين الفلسفة والدين وحصراً من الغزالي وابن رشد إلى الطوسي والخواجة زادة. والكتاب في هذه المعالجة لا يحلل مسألة الصراع بين الفلسفة والدين بأسلوب العوام، بما لا يرضي ميولهم، أو يوافق نزعاتهم. وهو لا يختصر المشكلة بإطلاق، وعِبَر التاريخ، منذ نشوئها وحتى اليوم، إنما هو يبرز وجهاً من أهم وجوهها، فيتناول في العمق الحملة التي شنها الغزالي على الفلاسفة، وهو الخبير بمبادئهم والعالم بقواعدهم. كما يعرض أيضاً في ردود ابن رشد، ومنهجيته العقلية، وخطه العلمي في محاولة التوفيق وفي إرساء المعارف والمعتقدات على أسس عقلية ثابتة. وما بين الغزالي وابن رشد (في الموقع الفكري لا التاريخي)، يظهر محققان جديدان، هما علاء الدين الطوسي والخواجة زادة مصلح الدين، ويتراوحان في مواقفهما بين الفلاسفة والمحليين، رغم تصريحهما جهاراً بالانتماء إلى مدرسة الغزالي.
