في هذا الكتاب مجموع قصص قصيرة، تضم أشخاصاً وأحداثاً وأماكن لا تبدو كما هي في الواقع، يمارس من خلالها الكاتب لعبة سردية يطل من خلالها على بنى ذهنية تشكل مجتمع ما قبل الحداثة من تاريخ بلاده الإجتماعي حيث يبدو الجن، والعرَاف، وشيخ القرية، وحياة الصحراء، والإيمان وبالغيبات مادة يستقي منها صياغة الظاهرة في سرد فني يتجاوز الواقع، ويقدم من خلاله رؤيا ناضجة وناقدة لمشكلاته وتجاوزاته باستخدام أدوات لغوية ولسانية تقف وراءها موهبة الكاتب في ابتداعه لحيلَ بلاغية تعكس سيطرته على النص. ففي قصة "بكاء" سنصاب بالدهشة ونحن نستمع إلى حارس المقبرة وهو يروي لنا قصة الرجل الذي اختطف من قبره بعد دفنه يقول: "سمعت أقداماً تتحرك في المقبرة، كانت الظلمة مطبقة على كل شيء، لكني رأيت (...) لا أدري ماذا رأيت؟ لكنه بيدين طويلتين كلها مفاصل، يتحرك بواسطة يديه، جسده كجسد حيوان.. لا لا .. بل إنسان، آآه لا أدري (...) رأيته يدور حول القبر، ما هي إلا لحظة حتى أخرج الميت من قبره، علقه بمنسابه وجره مختفياً (...)؟!".
ما يميز سرد "العباس معافا" لغة تشكيلية قادرة على أحداث الدهشة والصدقة لدى القارئ، وكذلك انتقاله بالسرد من الواقع إلى الرمز وخصوصاً في استحضاره الأساطير والحكايات الخرافية، الأمر الذي ميَز فنه عن غيره من الأدباء... جدير بالقراءة.
