من مفاخر مجمع اللغة السريانية في بغداد، أن يدرج في قائمة مطبوعاته القيمة، نشر كتاب "اللؤلؤ المنثور في تاريخ العلوم والآداب السريانية" تأليف البطريرك العلامة مار أغناطيوس أفرام الأول برصوم، أحد أقطاب اللغتين الشقيقتين العربية والسريانية، الذي لمس حاجة المكتبة العربية إلى كتاب يعرف الناطقين بالضاد بتاريخ العلوم والآداب السريانية في مختلف العصور التي مرت بها، فعند إلى تأليف هذا الكتاب النفيس.
ولم يقدم المؤلف على هذا العمل الشاق، إلا بعد بحث عميق، وتحقيق دقيق، منقباً عن المخطوطات السريانية قديمها وحديثها، في المكتبات العالمية الشهيرة، وخزائن الكتب العامة والخاصة في ديار الشرق والغرب. وقد تناول هذه المخطوطات درساً وتمحيصاً، مدى ثلاثين عاماً، غائصاً في بحر الآداب والعلوم، فجاء كتابه عقداً غالي الثمن، زين فيه جيد السريانية، بل آية فريدة في تاريخ علوم السريانية وآدابها. وينطوي هذا السفر الحافل على ما أنتجته قرائح السريان الغربيين وحسب، دون المشارقة النساطرة على مدى حقبة قدرها ألف وثمانمائة سنة، وقد بلغ هذا المؤلف القمة في موضوعه.
وإنك لواجد فيه من المواضيع والأبحاث ما أغفله المؤرخون المذكورون آنفاً، كالخط والشعر والفروض الدينية (الطقوس البيعية) على تشعب أبوابها وأنواعها، وتاريخ الأدب في الأزمنة المتأخرة من سنة 1290 إلى وقتنا هذا وفوائد جغرافية للبلاد المذكور فيه وشذوراً تاريخية دقيقة لاثنين وسبعين ديراً وجداول لمواطن الثقافة وخزائن الكتب السريانية القدمى وسلاسل للأطباء ومؤلفي الليتورجيات والحسايات (أدعية الاستغفار) والخطاطين وطائفة من المصنفات والمخطوطات المجهولة إلى غير ذلك من الفوائد التاريخية. وإصلاح أخطاء تناقلها الكتاب المعاصرون بدون روية، وكل ذلك بنقد نزيه دقيق جهد الإمكان.
وتقرأ فيه فصلاً تضمن خلاصة أعمال جماعة المستشرقين الفضلاء الذين خدموا الأدب، ونقد طائفة من المآخذ التي أخذناها على رهط منهم ساقهم إليها غلو معيب ودعاية مغرضة مما ينافي روح العلم بل يسممه ويضعف قيمة إنتاجه.
