بدأت صناعة الدهانات في الهند عام 1902 حيث أنشئ أول مصنع في كلكتا و قبل الحرب العالمية الأولى كانت أغلب الدهانات تستورد من الخارج, ثم عندما اندلعت تلك الحرب انقطع الاستيراد و هذا ما شجع على غقامة المصانع الوطنية لسد حاجة البلاد و في فترة ما بين الحربين الأولى و الثانية قدمت إغراءات كثيرة للصناعة و قد استعد الصناع لإنشاء مصانع للخضابات و الألوان الجافة و الديستمير و المعاجين الصبغية و الطلاءات المصنعة و الفرانيش و الراتنجات و المواد المساعدة الأخرى و كل ذلك ساعد على سرعة التقدم و أصبحت الهند تصدر الطلاءات إلى مختلف أنحاء البلاد من بينها ثماني عشرة مؤسسة تعود للقطاع النقابي. و الطلب على الدهانات و الراتنجات يزداد بشكل ملحوظ خلال العقد الأخير من القرن العشرين و رغم كل التقدم فإن ما أنجز لا يستلفت الأنظار.
ويعد هذا الكتاب مرجعاً يدعم تطور هذه الصناعة بما يتناوله من أبحاث و هي الوضع الحالي لصناة الهانات و إنتاجها و سوقها و موادها الأساسية , و من ثم يتحدث عن أسس صناعة الدهانات, و صفات و خصائص الخضابات, و الراتنجات الطبيعية و الصناعية القلفونة و استرات القلفونة, و المذيبات و الملدنات و المجففات, و تركيب الفرانيش, و بعدها يتحدث عن تركيبات الدهان, و أخيراً طرق فحص و مراقبة خصائص الدهان.
