يتضمن هذا الكتاب "الصوفية والتصوف" دراسة شاملة تبحث في موضوع التصوف نشأته ورجاله ومعتقداته وآراء العلماء المتقدمين والمعاصرين فيه، وذلك كله في ضوء الكتاب والسنة النبوية في البدء كان الحديث عن معنى التصوف، ومن هو الصوفي، ومصدر التصوف الإسلامي وعقيدة أهل التصوف، ومن ثم تم الحديث عن أقوال بعض كبار العلماء في التصوف والصوفية، ورأي الصوفية في الاتحاد والحلول، وشروط المشيخة الصوفية، تعدد الطرق الصوفية، والفرق بين التصوف الشرعي والتصوف الفلسفي، مرتبة اليقين، أقوال الحلاج، وابن عربي بالصوفية.
وفي الكتاب أيضاً ردود من المؤلف السيد "يوسف هاشم الرفاعي" دونها على الاتهامات التي شاعت عن الصوفية والمصوفين والتي منها: "أنهم (المتصوفون) متهمون بنشر عقيدة وحدة الوجود والقول بالحقيقة المحمدية وأنه المستوى على العرش وقد خلقت السموات من نوره، أنهم يدعون أن إبليس كان موحداً عابداً وهو من أهل الجنة، إنهم أسسوا الطريقة الرفاعية ببرقمة البلبل... كما وفي الكتاب وتحديداً في الجزء الأخير منه رأي دونه الدكتور "محمد سليمات فرج" وتحدث فيه عن موقف السلف الصالح من الصوفية، وفيه أيضاً بحث قيم للشيخ العلامة "محمد بن الصديق الغماري الحسني" وهذا البحث هو جزء من كتابه "حسن التلطف في بيان وجوب سلوك التصوف على جميع المسلمين".
لا ننكر أنه دخل في الطريق دخلاء أدعياء وجهلاء اتخذوا الطريق سلما لتحصيل أغراضهم وشهوتهم وابتدعوا فيها بدعا ما أنزل الله بها من سلطان. وزعموا أنهم أهل الحقيقة يجوز لهم ما يكون محرما في الشريعة وكذبوا فإن الشريعة والحقيقة صنوان وما خالفت الشريعة الحقيقة قط إلا في نظر جاهل. فمثل هؤلاء ليسوا من الصوفية في شئ وأول من تبرأ منهم الصوفية. ومن الظلم البين أن يعترض بعض الناس بفعل هؤلاء الجهلة ويجعلهة حجة على التصوف والصوفية, فما الصوفية إلا قوم جاهدوا أنفسهم في الله فهداهم الله وما التصوف إلا اتباع الكتاب والسنة.
