يتناول الكتاب عدة موضوعات منها: موقف المفسرين من القرآن الكريم. ويناقش ضمن هذا الموضوع: التفسير والتأويل والمتشابه؛ ومصادر التفسير؛ والمدارس التفسيرية؛ والتصوف النظري وخصائصه. كما يتناول موضوع التفسير الإشاري: تعريفه، وموقف الدارسين منه؛ وشروط قبوله ورأي المستشرقين فيه؛ وتاريخ ظهوره، ومصادره، وخصائصه.
وترتكز دراسة التفسير الإشاري في الكتاب على أمرين هما: التصوف العملي من جهة، والتفسير الباطن من جهة ثانية.
