«إن الذين آمنوا والذين هادوا والصابئون والنصارى من آمن بالله واليوم الآخر وعمل صالحاً فلا خوف عليهم ولا هم يحزنون» (الآية 69 من سورة المائدة/ القرآن الكريم)
تناول الفقهاء والمؤرخون المسلمون، شيعة وسنة، دين المندائيين، واختلفوا حوله في أن يكون أصحابه من أهل الكتاب أو شبه الكتاب، واختلفوا في جواز أخذ الجزية وبالتالي الاعتراف بهم كديانة لها حق حماية المسلمين والأمن بينهم. إلا أن أكثر المتشددين ضدهم هم فقهاء الشافعية، بينما كان للفقهاء الحنفيين والشيعة فتاوى وآراء إيجابية منهم، اعتماداً على ما ورد في القرآن الكريم بخصوص الصابئة، وما ورد في الكتب الصابئية، حسب قراءة علي خامئني لها. وبالتالي المندائيون أهل دين سماوي توجهوا إلى غاية السموات بعقولهم وأفئدتهم، وبفكرة السفن الكونية وبحارتها الكائنات النورية، ولم يجعلوا الكواكب آلهة بل هي عندهم أمكنة لكائنات النور والظلام, والله لديهم متعال عرشه يطوف فوق بحار النور النقية. ومثلما للأديان الأخرى معاريجها لهم معراجهم وجنتهم ونارهم.
