الموسوعة العربية العالمية " المجلد الرابع " ، إن اللغة هي وعاء الفكر وسفير العقل ، ووجه الحضارة والحضارات لا تفنى لانقطاع التسلسل العرقي لصانعيها ، ولكنها تموت بموت اللغة الحاملة لها . إن عملية موت اللغات أو اندثارها وتواريها أمر مدون معروف ولكن بدء اللغات ونشأتها لغز لم يُحل بعد ، فالتاريخ المكتوب أو المنقوش الذى بين أيدينا يكف نفسه عن تقديم معلومات عن زمن وكيفية بدء اللغة أو اللغات ومراحل نشأتها . ومن الحلقات المفقودة من ذاكرة التاريخ أي ذكر لطفولة لغة فضلاً عن مخاض ولادتها . وتبدو الدهشة من غياب ذلك أشد في حالة اللغة العربية إذ إن اكتمال هذه اللغة وسموها قد سبق أي أثر يؤرخ لها ، وكل ما يقال عن كيفية نشأة اللغات لا يعدو كونه حدساً يدخل في باب الظن والتخمين ولا يسلك في باب العلم واليقين ، وقد بلغ اليأس من الوقوف على معرفة ذلك ببعض علماء اللغويات في الغرب أن طرحوا المحاولة في هذا الأمر وأخرجوه من دائرة البحث والإهتمام .
