تستلهم هذه الرواية عناصر التاريخ شخوصاً ووقائع ومجريات، وتبني فرادتها كأثر فني معاصر وحديث، من خلال منظور فكري وفلسفي جديد للتاريخ تسلح به الروائي المغربي ليحقق من خلال عمله الروائي الأول، إنها محاولة فنية راقية لإعادة صوغ التاريخ وإسقاطه على الحاضر بطريقة ذكية. رواية تنتزع مكانتها في عالم الروايات العربية ذات المصادر التاريخية، وتنبه إلى غنى التاريخ العربي وطواعيته في يدي فنان مبدع.
قالت فيها لجنة التحكيم التي منحتها جائزة "الناقد" لرواية للعام 1990: مجهود واضح في استيعاب فترة حكم الحاكم بأمر الله، وإسقاط الحاضر عليه، وهو استيعاب للموضوع كما هول للأسلوب، وهو لا يلتزم الغالب التقليدي للرواية التاريخية، إذ يتراوح الشد الروائي بين اللوحات القصصية حيناً والتسلسل الروائي حيناً آخر، تتخللها مقاطع بأقلام مؤرخي تلك الفترة مما يضفي على العمل الروائي عبق التاريخ، فيتضافر الموضوع والأسلوب والشكل في تقديم عمل فني متكامل.
الميزة الأولى -في هذه الرواية هي مقدرتها على الإفادة من التراث السردي الغني- في كتابات مؤرخينا القدامى، وامتلاكها -على الأغلب- ناحية اللغة المتسقة مع مادتها تاريخياً ونفسياً واجتماعياً وهو اتساقيندر أن يحدث في هذا الضرب من الكتابة الروائية المحدثة.
اعتقد أن ميزة هذا النص تتجلى في تحقيق علائق جدلية بين الشخوص واللغات وطرائق السرد. وإذا كانت لغة المصادر والمراجع التاريخية تحتل مكانة بارزة، فإن لغة الكاتب المحاكية لها تضطلع بوظيفة التهجين والباروديا وتفجير السخرية.
