وقعت حوادث هذه القصة على أرض دولة "بيرو" بأمريكا الجنوبية التي كان يعيش فيها منذ مئات السنين قبائل الإنكاس، ثم غزاها المستعمر الإسباني.
تحكي عن سيدة جميلة اسمها "ريناتا" جاءت من شمال أمريكا الباردة من كندا لتتزوج بـ"كندال" لكنها لم تعش معه كثيراً لسفره المستمر إلى الأدغال، حيث كان يقضي عمره إلى جانب الوطنيين بهدف دراسة أسلوب معيشتهم وعاداتهم وطباعهم ليتخذ منها مادة تفيده في دراساته الجامعية وفي إتمام رسالة الدكتوراه في علم الإنسان ولكنه يفقد حياته إثر إصابته بمرض خبيث أهمل في علاجه. وتحب "ريناتا" رجلاً آخر حباً عميقاً، ولكنها تصطدم في طريقها بشتى العراقيل. وتحاول إيجاد عدة استفسارات عن سير حياته.
