لماذا اختار فارس غرايبة (21 غم.) عنواناً لرواية؟... في عام 1901، وزن الطبيب دنكان ماكدوجال ستّة مرضى بمرض السل بينما كانوا في النزع الأخير قبيل الموت، كان من السهل نسبياً تحديد موعد الوفاة في غضون بضع ساعات، وعند هذه النقطة وضع السرير بأكمله على ميزان بحجم ضخم كالذي يستخدم في الصناعات والذي يعتبر حساساً لدرجة قياس الغرامات، وبناءً على القراءات التي حصل عليها تبين أن أربعة من المتوفين الستّة فقدوا من كتلتهم ما مقداره (21 غم).
وبناءً عليه، خرج ماكدوجال بنظريته أن الروح عندما غادرت الجسد نقصت كتلته لما مقداره (21 غم) والتي اعتبرها كتلة الروح.
تتحدث الرواية عن أستاذ جامعي، كان يعيش حياة طبيعية، تزوج وبعد سنة من زواجه تعرف إلى زميل له في قسم العلوم السياسية، جاءه الصديق ذات يوم ليخبره أنه وبعض زملائه ينوون تأسيس حزب، حزب سياسي أسموه "حزب الفجر".
وعندما علمت السلطات بالأمر، تم فصل الأساتذة من الجامعة، وعليه فصل الأستاذ الجامعي / بطل الرواية من وظيفته أيضاً بعد أن لفقوا له تهمة "التحرش بإحدى الطالبات".
تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية حتى ندرك أن أبطال الرواية اللذان رمز إليهما المؤلف بــ (كا) و(با) هما من عالم الأموات وقد تحررت روحيهما أثناء الموت، وأصبحت تخترق الأمكنة والأزمنة وتحول بين الأحياء، إلا أن إنعكاس التجارب التي مرت بها روحهما أثناء الحياة أثرت بشكل مباشر على حياتهما الآخروية، ودخلت في منعطفات لم يكن بحسبان لها!!...
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ: "... دويّ طلق ناريّ بعثر سكون الليل كما بعثر دماغ الشاب، وجم (كا) نظر إلى (با) الذي جفل، قال: ماذا حدث يا (با)؟ - ألا ترى؟ قتل نفسه المسكين - لا ليس هو من قتل نفسه، كل أولئك قتلوه، كل أولئك، حزيناً خرج (كا) من ذلك المكان، تلفت حوله باحثاً عن (با)، نادى بأعلى صوته، لم يأته لا ردّ ولا جواب، اختفى (با)...".
