الغندور جالس بصمت يتفرج على الرقيب ماسك برقبة الشابين يهزهما هزاً وعلى وحهه تعبير من الأنفة والكبرياء. وعند تفتيشهما عثر معهما على سكينتين طويلتين، وتحفظ الرقيب على أسلحتهما فوراً. يا سيدي دخيلك، داخلين على عرضك -استنجد الشبان بالرقيب- ألا يكفي ما حدث لنا، حبسونا سنتين بالصحراء لأننا اعتقلنا ونحن نفك رخام قصر مهجور، ولو نفدنا ما كنا حكينا، لم يبق شيء إلا وهبشناه من الحنفيات للثريات ونقلناها لبيت الغندور وركبناها له، وياليت وقفت هنا، كان يشغلنا على (زق) طون وسردين ودخان، شي ننكمش وناكل فلقة مثل كعب الديست، وشي ننفد ويأخذها يبيعها ويقول برافو. يعطيكم العافية. والله لأشتري لكم بيوتاً بالمالكي. وبالآخر فص ملح وداب! اختفى. دورنا عليه في كل مكان وبتنا بالشوارع أمام منزله ولا فائدة، رجعنا نهبش الرخام لعلنا ننتفع... كمشونا وحبسونا، يا سيدي اتركنا نذبحه ولك الثواب، وإذا ما بدك اتركنا نروح على بيوتنا يستر على عرضك.
