مع بداية التصنيع الذي نقل البشرية إلى مرحلة جديدة، بدأت أحد الشرور تتزايد، إذ أخذت البيئة تتلوث، ولم يتنبه الإنسان في البداية، وازدادت التراكمات الكمية حتى وصلت في زماننا إلى أبعاد نوعية جديدة، تلوث الهواء والبحار والأرض، وانقراض أنواع من الحيوانات والنباتات، وتآكل الغابات. ثم "تأثير الصوبة" والأمطار الحامضية.
كان المفروض أن يستجيب الإنسان بسرعة ويتجنب تأثير هذه الشرور الجديدة التي ستؤثر على الجنس البشري ذاته في المستقبل. لكن الاستجابة حتى الآن ليست في مستوى الحدث. حتى انعقدت "قمة الأرض" في ريو دي جانيرو التي كان مجرد انعقادها وحضور هذا العدد الغفير من رؤساء الدول والحكومات، انعكاساً لخطورة الموضوع. ورغم ذلك فما زالت الاستجابة غير مناسبة لحجم المشكلة في رأينا.
وقد حاولت بهذا المجهود تقديم أبعاد المشكلة للقارئ العربي حتى يحكم بنفسه.
