بطل هذه الرواية يدعى ألبر. بيولوجياً هو طفل لم يتجاوز الخامسة من عمره، يلعب كالصغار مع أترابه، وفعلياً هو قزم ناضج يجاري أنبه الكبار في أفكاره وملاحظاته وتحاليله.
محيطه في الحي الذي يسكنه مع والديه مليء بالمفاجآت وبالأحداث:
- يقود أطفال الحي ويترأسهم في لعب البلى، ويواجه ظلم المفسدين منهم.
- يحلل أسباب جريمة حصلت في الحي، فيقوم بدرس علاقة المقتول ببعض شبان الحي بحثاً عن المجرم الحقيقي، ويحلل شخصيات هؤلاء الشبان بطريقة نفسية، فيفلسف طبيعة الحياة البشرية ويستكشف مكامن ضعفها وقوتها بخفة دم من وجهة نظر ولو متقدمة للغاية بالنسبة لطفل في الخامسة من عمره.
- يجابه بأسلوب مثير فساد الإدارة العامة بأحد مدرائها حيث يعمل والده.
كل هذه الأحداث والمفاجآت تتابع على صفحات هذه الرواية بأسلوب ممتع يثير شغف القارئ، فيطّلع على سلسلة من الصور النمطية للطبقة الأقل من المتوسطة من سكان مدينة إسطنبول.
