عبد الأحد السبتي (مواليد فاس سنة 1948)، هو أستاذ باحث في التاريخ ومؤرخ مغربي، يعمل بكلية الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية بالرباط. عمل في السابق أستاذا للاجتماعيات بثانوية عبد المالك السعدي بالقنيطرة. وقد حصل على دكتوراه السلك الثالث بجامعة باريس 7، ودكتوراه الدولة بجامعة محمد الخامس - أكدال.

يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يخاطب نوعين من المتلقين، فهناك عموم القراء الذين سوف يجدون، من خلال النصوص المقترحة، عناصر شيقة ومدخلاً حياً إلى ماضي المدينة: لوحات من النشاط الاقتصادي، أحداث معبرة، نماذج اجتماعية، وغير ذلك من المواد التي يعسر الحصول عليها دون بذل الجهد المضني عبر منعرجات مصادر الفترة المدروسة.
أما القارئ المتخصص، ونعني الطالب أو الباحث في مجال التاريخ الوسيط أو التاريخ الحضري، فإن محاورته تنطوي على أبعاد أخرى. لقد قادتنا تجربة التدريس والبحث إلى الشعور بضرورة وضع ملفات توثيقية إشكالية تجمع بين مجهود رصد النصوص وبين اقتراح قضايا من شأنها أن تغني المناقشات الدائرة -أو الغائبة- داخل حقل التاريخ الحضري. وبذلك قد نتفادى منزلق اختزال الظاهرة التاريخية في نماذج نظرية مبسطة لا تستند إلى ما يكفي من الاستشهاد والأدلة، ونتجنب في آن واحد ذلك المنزلق الآخر دور الباحث في العمل التوثيقي الصرف.
