السمة الغالبة على موضوعات هذا الكتاب هي النحو والصرف، ولكنه يضم أشياء مثل التفسير والفلسفة والمنطق والفقه في بعض الموضوعات، وأحيانا يميل إلى سرد حكايات تتعلق بشاهد شعري استطراداً وخروجاً عن المادة التي يتحدث عنها، على طريقة ابن هشام في المغني، وابن السوسني القيرواني لم يؤلف الكتاب على طريقة النحاة المتأخرين بدءاً بأقسام الكلام وختاماً بالعدد ونصب المضارع وجزمه، وإنما نظم أرجوزة لأقسام من النحو والصرف وشرح هذه الأرجوزة بناءً على طلب من حفاظها وإتماماً للفائدة كما يقول. بدأ المصنف كتابه بمقدمة شرح فيها أهمية الإعراب، لأنه الهادي إلى الصواب إذ به تيسير بعلم كتاب الله المنزل وتنقيح حديث نبيه المرسل، فإنما هو المقصد الأسنى والوسيلة الحسنى… وبعدها انتقل إلى البسملة وأوجه الإعراب المختلفة فيها على طريقة المفسرين، ثم قدم شرحا نحويا للرجز الذي نظمه بهذا الشأن. ولأهمية هذه المخطوطة اعتنى الدكتور "عبد الحسين محمد الفتلي" بدراسة متن المخطوطة وبتحقيقه تحقيقاً شاملاً فعمد إلى تبيان أرقام الآيات الكريمة المذكورة في متن المخطوطة، كما واعتنى بشرح النصوص الغامضة التي جاءت في المتن، هذا إلى جانب عنايته بشرح الشواهد الشعرية المستشهد بها وبإرجاعها إلى مكانها في الكتب القديمة.
