يعد هذا الكتاب المكتوب باللغة الإنجليزية من أهم الكتب التي تعرضت لمحاولة تفسير النهضة اليابانية التي أذهلت العالم كله بالعودة إلى أصول الثقافة اليابانية التقليدية المعروفة باسم "البوشيدو" وكان اختياره للترجمة إلى العربية محكوماً بمجموعة من الأسباب التي يمكن إجمالها فيما يلي:
1-أن الكتاب يتجاوب بعمق مع أهم إشكالية في ثقافتنا العربية المعاصرة، تلك هي إشكالية "الأصالة والمعاصرة" إنها إشكالية "الهوية" المهددة بالضياع بالعكوف على الماضي واجترار أمجاده من جانب البعض، أو بسبب التبعية الكاملة للغرب اقتصادياً وسياسياًَ وثقافياً عند البعض الآخر. التجربة اليابانية كما يتعرض لها المؤلف في هذا الكتاب تلقى كثيراً من الأضواء الكاشفة على تلك الإشكالية.
2-إن الكاتب كتبه مؤلفه باللغة الإنكليزية مخاطباً به القارئ الأجنبي عامة، وهو من هذه الزاوية مفيد للقاريء غير المتخصص علاوة على فائدته للقارئ المثقف المهتم بقضايا الفكر وإشكاليات الواقع.
3-إن مؤلف الكتاب الدكتور إنيازو نيتوبى (1862-1933) ليس مجرد عالم ومفكر، بل كان ديبلوماسياً شغل مناصب هامة يابانية ودولية. هذا إلى جانب حساسيته الأدبية والشعرية.
