في هذه الرسالة التي يضمها هذا الكتاب، يحاول المؤلف الوقوف على بعض العناصر الأساسية التي يتكون منها بحث العصمة، فهذا البحث هو واحد من أهم بحوث الفكر الإسلامي ومن المسائل التي ما زالت حية في أبحاث علم الكلام والعقيدة الإسلامية، لما تعترضه هذه المسألة من أهمية قصوى في تحديد مصادر التشريع من جهة، وما تمثله من نتائج فعلية وقائمة في حياة كل فرد مسلم يريد أن يتعبد الله تعالى، في اتباع أحكامه، في مجال العمل والسلوك من جهة أخرى.
وجاء هذا البحث، في إطار مجموعة محاضرات سبق أن ألقاها كمال الحيدري حوله "آية التطهير" ودلاتها على العصمة، وقد خصص الفصل الأول للحديث عن "الإمامة"، التي نصّ القرآن الكريم بها لبعض أبياته وأصفيائه، للترابط الوثيق بين البحثين، وللصلة الأكيدة فيما بينها لذا فقد انتظم البحث في فصلين رئيسيين: 1-الإمامة، 2-العصمة.
حيث ابتدئ الفصل الأول بإمامة إبراهيم الخليل عليه السلام، ثم بالحديث عن صفات الإمام ومن خلاله الرؤية القرآنية، والاختتام بأبحاث عديدة حول الملكوت ورؤيته. وابتدئ الفصل الثاني بآية التطهير، وما تفيده من شمولية في نفي الرجس وإثبات الطهارة لمن نزلت في حقه، أردف ذلك بأبحاث هامة في العصمة مفهوماً ومضموناً، ثم بالتعقيب لها بالحديث عن (الإرادة) والاختام ببحث روائي في شأن نزول آية التطهير.
