لم يعد الكمبيوتر مخصصاً للعلماء والمهندسين وحدهم، كما أنه لم يعد الكماليات المستعملة لممارسة ألعاب الفيديو، أو لمجرد التباهي، بل أصبح من الأجهزة الضرورية في جميع حقول النشاطات الإنتاجية ولم يعد بالإمكان الاستغناء عنه.
وقد بدأت هذه الظاهرة بالتجلي اعتباراً من أوائل الثمانينات، وباتت المعلوماتية، (أو مجموعة العلوم الكمبيوترية المختلفة). إحدى أهم حقول المعرفة الإنسانية. وإذ ذاك كان من الطبيعي أن يصاب الكمبيوتر "بأمراض" وأن يحرف استعماله عن مساره الطبيعي، وقد ظهر ما عرف بـ"الفيروسات الكمبيوترية"، كما كثرت موجة "القرصنة المعلوماتية". وقد أسهبت الصحافة في تغطية هذه المطبات التي اعترضت المسيرة المعلوماتية، لكن الحقيقة هي أن القليلين يعرفون الطبيعة الحقيقية لما يمكن أن يسمى بـ"الإجرام المعلوماتي"، وخصوصاً في أمم العالم العربي. من جهة ثانية، فإن الكمبيوتر يلعب دوراً حيوياً في الحروب العصرية، وتعميماً للفائدة، رأى أنه لا بد من التطرق إلى هذا الموضوع الحيوي، حيث تناول فيه "أمن الكمبيوتر" بشكل عام، بعد تعريف للمكونات الرئيسة في الأنظمة الكمبيوترية، ثم الفيروسات الكمبيوترية وحوادث القرصنة، مع وسائل مكافحتها المختلفة، وأنظمة التجسس الإلكترونية، والكمبيوتر العسكري، وختم بتخصيص الفصول الثلاثة الأخيرة لجوانب استعمال الكومبيوتر كسلاح.
