ما كثر الإبداع في أواخر عهد القابعين تنبه علماء الأمة إلى ضرورة تدوين الآثار وتبويب الأخبار مخافة أن يقع التحريف في أحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، بعد أن كانوا يعتمدون في روايتها على سعة حفظهم وسيلان أذهانهم. فهيئ الله نفراء من قام بجمع الحديث الشريف وتدوينه فصنفت المساند وقل إمام من الحفاظ إلا وصنف حديثه على المسانيد. لكن محمد بن إسماعيل البخاري لما وجد هذه التصانيف جامعة بين ما يدخل تحت التصحيح والتحسين حركت همته لجمع الحديث الصحيح الذي لا يرتاب فيه أمين.
والبخاري هو أبي عبد الله محمد بن إسماعيل وإبراهيم بن الغيره الحجفي البخاري. ولد سنة أربع وتسعين ومئة ببخارى وتوفي سنة ست وخمسين ومئتين وعمره اثنتان وستون سنة إلا ثلاثة عشر يوماً.
يقول البخاري: "صنفت الصحيح لست عشرة سنة، خرجته من ست مئة ألف حديث وجعلته حجة فيما بيني وبين الله تعالى" صنفه في المسجد الحرام ولم يخرج فيه إلا صحيحاً. أما عن سبب تسميته (الجامع المسند الصحيح) فهو أنه لم يخص بصنفٍ فأورد فيه الأحكام والفضائل والأخبار عن الأمور الماضية والآتي. وهو صحيح إذ ليس فيه شيء ضعيف. وقوله لأنه قصد إلى تخريج الأحاديث التي يتصل إسنادها ببعض الصحابة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم.
وقد اتفق العلماء على أن أصح الكتب المصنفة: صحيحاً البخاري ومسلم واتفق الجمهور على أن (صحيح البخاري) أصحها وأكثرهما فوائد، كما تفق العلماء على القول بأفضلية البخاري في الصحة على كتاب مسلم وهم متفقون أيضاً على أنه أعلم بهذا الفن من مسلم.
إن أصح كتاب بعد كتاب الله تعالى هو صحيح الإمام البخاري حيث التزم في نقل أحاديثه التي أوردها فيه أعلى درجات الصحة واشترط لنقلها شروطا خاصة التزم بها وتلقته الأمة بالقبول. وقد اعتمد فيه طريقة الكتب والأبواب وقد أتى على مختلف الكتب الفقهية إضافة إلى غيرها من الكتب كالتفسير والعلم والإيمان وغيرها.
