رغم كثرة الكتابات النسائية مؤخراً، في مجال السيرة الذاتية، ظلّت الدراسات الأكاديمية والنقدية لها قليلة جداً وشديدة الإيجاز، في مقابل إهتمام نقدي متنام بالسيرة الذاتية الذكورية.
هذا الكتاب يتناول السيرة الذاتية النسائية في الأدب العربي المعاصر، وتنبع أهمية هذا الموضوع من ممارسة المرأة العربية نوعاً من الكتابات النثرية كانت وما تزال إلى حدٍّ ما تعدُّ من الكتابات التي تٌسْتَقْبَلُ بشيء من الحذر والحرج في المجتمعات العربية.
في حين أن السيرة الذاتية تستدعي الجرأة والكشف عن الذات وهما صفتان ليستا مألوفتين في الكتاب العربية وخصوصاً كتابات المرأة، إذ يمكن أن نلاحظ أن المرأة العربية كتبت عن ذاتها بأشكال مختلفة، يدخل بعضها في باب السيرة الذاتية من بعض الوجوه، على صورة يوميات أو مذكرات أو أدب رحلات أو رسائل، وهذا النوع من النصوص كان ضعيفاً وخجولاً، ولكنه أصبح حاضراً وجريئاً في العقود الأخيرة من القرن العشرين.
في هذا الكتاب قراءة لنصوص لنساء شهيرات اعترفن بأن نصوصهن سير ذاتية، وهي نصوص تنطبق عليها شروط السيرة الذاتية بمفهومها الحديث لجهة تسجيل جوانب خاصة وشبه كاملة عن حياتهن.
