تكشف السطور في هذا الكتب عن إبداع المخرج السينمائي الذي غدا للسينما وجه غير الذي ألفته السينما المصرية بعد أعمال الإبداعية. فالسينما عند شاهين معركة وسلاح، إنها سينما الموقف، وسينما التأمل وسينما الرؤية المستقبلية. ففي أفلامه يتأمل شاهين مصر وإنسانها، ويشهد على واقع مصر في تاريخها المعاصر، ويأخذ من هذا الواقع موقفاً، فمنذ 50 سنة ويوسف شاهين يعمل في السينما. وخلال هذه العقود الخمسة والتي بلغت حصيلة أعماله 33 فيلماً روائياً طويلاً و4 أفلام قصيرة، جعل من السينما، وهي وسيلة تعبير واتصال، أداته في خوض معركة كبرى مع النفس أولاً ومع المجتمع ومع الآخرين، ومعركة ضد الظلم والاستغلال والهيمنة والتطرف فالسينما ليست للتسلية فقط عند شاهين، ولكنها يجب أن تتجاوز التسلية، أو أن تستعمل التسلي، لتصل إلى ما هو أبعد. فشاهين السينمائي هو أيضاً مفكر ومناضل ومحرض ومصلح اجتماعي على طريقته. هذه النظرة إلى السينما فرضت على شاهين أن يخوض، ومنذ بداياته الأولى، معركة من نوع آخر، معركة ضد المفهوم السائد للسينما ولدورها.
الكتابة السينمائية عند شاهين غير مسطحة. إنها عصبية، سريعة، متوترة، نابضة. في أفلامه الأولى كانت كتابته أكثر هدوءاً ووضوحاً. ومع الوقت صارت أكثر عصبية. ذلك أن هموم المخرج زادت تعقيداً. فبحثه في واقع مجتمعه، وبحثه عن نفسه، جعلاه يطرق أبواباً كثيرة كانت موصدة أمامه. وكأنه مع كل باب جديد يفتحه كان يجد أمامه أبواباً كثيرة أخرى مقفلة بانتظار أن يفتحها. فعالم شاهين عالم أبواب. عالم معقَّد، يمتزج فيه الذاتي بالموضوعي، ظاهره مبهرج وملوّن ومتحرك، وباطنه عذاب وبحث وصراع وقلق وتوتر وألم.
