إن نبوة محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم بنيت على معجزة القرآن، وإعجازه عمّ الثقلين وهو باق إلى يوم القيامة، وان كان قد علم بعجز أهل العصر الأول عن الإتيان بمثله وجه دلالته فمن باب أولى عجز العصور المتتالية عن الإتيان بمثله، لما للأولين من باع في اللغة. وفي هذا الكتاب يرد الإمام الباقلاني على من أنكر الإعجاز مبيناً مواضع ذلك الإعجاز مضيفاً ما يجب وصفه من القول في تنزيل متصرفات الخطاب، ترتيب وجوه الكلام، وما تختلف فيه طرق البلاغة وتتفاوت من جهته سبل البراعة، وما يشتبه له ظاهر الفصاحة.
ويختلف فيه المختلفون من أصل صناعة العربية والمعرفة بلسان العرب في أصل الوضع، ثم ما اختلف به مذاهب مستعمليه في فنون ما ينقسم إليه الكلام من شعر ورسائل وخطب وغير ذلك من مجاري الخطاب، وان كانت هذه الوجوه الثلاثة أصول ما يبين فيه التفاصح وتقصد فيه البلاغة، مشيراً إلى ما يجب في كل واحد من هذه الطرق ليعرف عظم محل القرآن، وليعلم ارتفاعه عن مواقع هذه الوجوه وتجاوز الحد الذي يصح، أو يجوز أن يوازن بينه وبينها، أو يشتبه ذلك على متأمل.
