مؤلف كتاب التكملة هو الأمير"علم الدين سنجر المسروري الصالحي"، وقد أراد به أن يكون كتابا ذيلا لكتاب البستان الجامع لجميع تواريخ أهل الزمان" ومكملا له من حيث انتهى به مؤلفه العماد أبي حامد الأصفهاني عند سنة 593 هـ، ليصل به إلى سنة 667 هـ وهي السنة التي صُنف فيها كتابه. ولكنه توقف به عند حوادث سنة 636 هـ بدون أن يذكر سببا لعدم متابعة الكتاب بعدها. وبالرجوع لأقسام هذه التكملة نجد أنها منقسمة الى قسمين: القسم الأول: وهو مختصر للقسم الأخير من كتاب "الكامل في التاريخ"لابن الأثير المتوفي سنة 630 هـ، يبدأ بحوادث سنة 594 هـ، وينتهي بنهاية "الكامل" في حوادث سنة 628 هـ، وفي هذا القسم بعض الإضافات الطفيفة، وخاصة في الوفيات، أضافها المصنف بإيجاز شديد. أما القسم الثاني: فيتناول أخبار ثماني سنوات بعد "الكامل" لابن الأثير، اعتبارا من حوادث ووفيات سنة 629 هـ حتى سنة 636 هـ. وهنا تكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب ففي القسم الثاني معلومات تاريخية دقيقة وجزئية ينفرد بها المؤلف دون غيره من المؤرخين المعاصرين الذين عاشوا في القرن السابع الهجري، ودونوا أخباره أمثال "ابن الواصل" في مفرّج الكروب في إخبار بني أيوب"، "وسيط ابن الجوزي" في "مرآة الزمان" وغيرهم، أمام هذه المعطيات رأى "عمر عبد السلام تدمري" أنه لمن المفيد أن يقوم بتحقيق هذا الكتاب من المجموع المخطوط وبنشره، لينتفع به القراء والباحثون وعشاق التاريخ والتراث العربي، وليضيف الى المكتبة التاريخية، واحدا من كتب التراث النادرة، وسمّاه: المختصر من الكامل في التاريخ وتكملته!!
