لبطرس في الأناجيل مكانة رفيعة الشأن على أنَّه رئيس الرسل الإثني عشر، وهو في سفر أعمال الرسل يُدير شؤون جماعة وأورشليم الأولى، بيد أنّنا لا نعرف إلاّ القليل من مدِّة حياته، من مجمع أورشليم (نحو السنة 49) حتى إستشهاده في رومة (في نحو 64- 67).
تختلف الرسالتان اللتان حُفظتا لنا، وهما تحملان اسم بطرس، عن رسائل بولس التي تزوِّدنا بكثير من الأخبار عن حياته، فهما فقيرتان جدّاً فيما يختصّ بحياة بطرس، فضلاً عن أنّهما رسالتان عامّتان إلى حَدِّ ما تتناولان موضوعان عامّة ولا تطلعانا على علاقات خاصّة بين صاحبهما والذين كتب إليهم، ولذلك صُنِّفنا في جملة الرسائل الكاثوليكيّة، أي العامّة.
لا تشبه رسالتا بطرس إحداهما الأخرى، لا في الإنشاء ولا في مضمونها، إنّ أولاهما تؤثر من غير عناء في حياتنا الحاضرة، لَمِا فيها من إرشادات حارّة ولَمِا يغمرها من روح الإنجيل، اما الرسالة الأخرى، وبُنيتها معقدة في أحيان كثيرة، فتبدو لنا بعيدة جدّاً من موضوعات إهتمامنا، ويُخشى أن تنفرِّنا بعنف تنديدها بأهل البدع.
