يشتمل الكتاب على خمس وحدات وتحتوي كل وحدة على عدد من الفصول، تناولت الوحدة الأولى المفاهيم العامة ذات الصلة بعلم البيئة والنظام البيئي بالإضافة إلى عملية دوران المادة وإنسياب الطاقة بداخل النظم البيئية الطبيعية، وتضمنت الوحدتان الثانية والثالثة المكونات الحية وغير الحية للنظم البيئية، وتطرقت الوحدة الرابعة لدراسة النظم البيئية الطبيعية في العالم، أما الوحدة الخامسة فتناولت قياس المتغيرات البيئية بالنظم البيئية المختلفة، مثل قياس عوامل المناخ والتربة، والعوامل ذات الصلة بالمكونات الحية للنظم البيئية.
