يقرن العقل بين إحساس الصوت وإحساس الصورة وبينه وبين أي إحساس من نوع آخر. ثم يقيم الصوت دليلاً على ما اقترن به من أحاسيس. فإذا كان هذا الصوت بعينه في الواقع مقروناً بهذه الصورة بعينها في الواقع ثم غابت الصورة وقام الصوت تولت أعصاب الدماغ المختصة توليد تلك الصورة الغائية. والصوت اللغوي يطرح مشاكل ينبري لمعالجتها العلماء والمفكرون، كل في مجاله ووفقاً لمقدرته. كيف يولد الصوت الأحاسيس القرينة؟ كيف دجّن الصوت وامتطي إلى المعنى؟ كيف تحول الصوت آلياً إلى خط والخط إلى صوت ضمن لسان واحد ومن لسان إلى آخر؟ هذا عدا مشاكل إرسال عمليات التحويل وحفظها. فالفيزياء اليوم في صدد بناء الطاقة المحولة. لهذه المسائل غايات دولية ومراكز أبحاث وعِدد وأموال ورؤوس. لكن ذلك لا يثني الباحث الذي لم يتح له شيء من ذلك عن التبصر في مسائل يستطيع أن يصلح بعض الفلاح في معالجتها ما دام كل فرد وكل جماعة مختبراً لغوياً.
وضمن هذه المقاربة يأتي هذا الكتاب وهو ينظر في أمرين: أمر الصوت الذي انتخب دليلاً على المعنى القرين، وأمر المعنى الذي اعتبر رمزاً يبين ما اقترن به من معان. إنه بذلك بين لغتين: لغة الكلام ولغة مدلول الكلام. وأسئلة تطرح نفسها في هذا المجال: كيف يصاغ اللفظ في الأصوات الخام؟ كيف تناط به الدلالة؟ ثم كيف تتطور الدلالة أو تتحرك ما بين قطبي الحقيقة والمجاز؟ وتلك الأسئلة هي التي يدور عليها الفصل الأول من الكتاب. أما باقي موضوعات الكتاب فهي تعالج بعض مذاهب العقل في الدلالة بأحد المعاني على آخر، ويتحرك ما بين الطاقة المولدة للكلام الحقيقي. فالمجازي وبين مبادئ العقل في الدلالة بالكتابة، وفي المجاز الوثني، وفي وعي الوعي لعمله وذاته.
ويمكن القول بأن هذا الكتاب يزود القارئ بمعرفة إضافية في ثلاث مجالات هي: المجال اللساني والمجال الفكري والمجال الإناسي.
