تمثل مادة هذا الكتاب مرجعاً مناسباً في مبادئ الاقتصاد لطلبة المراحل الأولى من التعليم الجامعي، لا سيما وأن هناك نقصاً شديداً في مثل هذه المصادر ولعل هذه الخطوة تيسر بعض الشيء مهمة كل من الأستاذ والطالب.
وينقسم الكتاب إلى جزئين رئيسيين، القسم الأول ويتناول بالتحليل سلوك الوحدات الاقتصادية. سواء كانت وحدات إنتاجية أو استهلاكية. أما القسم الثاني فيناقش الظواهر الاقتصادية في مجملها وعلى مستوى الاقتصاد القومي بصفة عامة.
يعتبر علم الاقتصاد علماً حديث النشأة إذا ما قورن بالعلوم الأخرى. فدراسة علم الاقتصاد لم تبدأ بصورة منتظمة إلا منذ قرنين من الزمان تقريباً، وعلى وجه التحديد بعد صدور كتاب "ثروة الأمم" للبريطاني "آدم سميث" وغيره من الكتاب الغربيين لكثير من الأفكار الاقتصادية، حيث كتب مقدمة تاريخه تعرض فيها لكثير من الظواهر الاقتصادية، في القرن الرابع عشر للميلاد.. وعلى الرغم من حداثة علم الاقتصاد، إلا أنه أخذ يتطور بشكل مضطرد وبدأ الاهتمام به يزداد من قبل الأفراد والمؤسسات والحكومات على حد سواء فالظروف الاقتصادية تؤثر إلى حد كبير في دخل الفرد وكيفية اختياره لعمله. كما تهتم المنشآت بحالة السوق وظروف الإنتاج، وتهتم الحكومات بالاستقرار الاقتصادي وتوفير مستوى معيشي لائق لأفراد المجتمع، وتوفير فرص العمل، والحد من ارتفاع الأسعار وغير ذلك من الأهداف الاقتصادي.
