يعالج هذا الكتاب ظاهرة المشاكلة في الصرف العربي، ويُقصد بالمشاكلة وجود مماثلة أو مطابقة بين الأصوات أو الصيغ أو التراكيب، مما ينتج عنه تغيير الصوت أو الصيغة أو التركيب، لمماثلة صيغة أخرى أو تركيب آخر. مما ينتج عنه أن تسير العبارة على إيقاع واحد، يؤدي إلى متعة نفسية عند المتكلم والمستمع في وقت واحد، وهذا يعود إلى ما تتميز به اللغة العربية من الموسيقية، وإيثار الخفة والسهولة اقتصاداً في الجهد العضلي، حيث تتماثل الأصوات أو تتقارب، فيتحقق الإنسجام الصوتي، وتيسير عملية النطق.
اقتصر البحث في هذا الكتاب على "المشاكلة التي تؤثر في البُنية أو الصيغة المفردة، فتحدث فيها تغييراً ما ...". لأجل ذلك انقسم الكتاب إلى خمسة فصول هي: الفصل الأول: (أثر المشاكلة في تغيير الصيغة) ويتحدث عن تغيير حركة عين الفعل الماضي الثلاثي المجرد لمشاكلة صيغة أخرى ... أما الفصل الثاني: (المشاكلة بالإبدال)، فيتناول المشاكلة الحادثة عن قلب صوت إلى صوت آخر ... ثم الفصل الثالث: (المشاكلة بالحذف)، ويشرح كيف تؤدي إرادة المشاكلة إلى حذف أحد أصوات الصيغة لتشاكل صيغة أخرى ... وأما الفصل الرابع: (المشاكلة بحمل صيغة على أخرى)، حيث تحمل الصيغة على صيغة أخرى لإرادة المشاكلة بينهما في التصريف، أو سلوكها حال اتصال الضمير بها ...، ويأتي الفصل الخامس والأخير في (المشاكلة بين المعاني والألفاظ التي تعبر عنها، وقد تمثل ذلك في: بناء الفعل الماضي، ومشاكلة حركة العين لمعناه، ومشاكلة المعاني التي تنتج عن الحروف الزائدة للحروف الزائدة.
