مصنف هذه الرسالة هو أبو منصور عبد الملك بن محمد بن إسماعيل الثعالبي النيسابوري، ولد سنة خمسين وثلاثمائة، وتوفي سنة تسع وعشرين وأربعمائة. ونسبته تشير إلى مهنته وهي خياطة جلود الثعالب.
كان من أئمة اللغة والأدب وقد صنف التصانيف الكثيرة البارعة.
وكتابه المتشابه يعد من أهم الكتب التي دونها في أسرار البلاغة، وقراءة متنه يتضح لنا أنه قد قسمه على ثلاثة أقسام: القسم الأول في المتشابه الذي يشبه التصحيف، والقسم الثاني في المتشابه من التجنيس الصحيح والقسم الثالث في المتشابه خطاً ولفظاً.
وبالنظر لأهميتها فقد اعتنى بتحقيقها وذلك عبر الاستعانة بكتب الأدب ودواوين الشعراء وكتب الثعالبي المطبوعة. فضبط النص وحقق الأعلام الواردة فيه ما أسعفته المصادر على ذلك.
