والتير فابير المهندس هو إنسان لا يؤمن إلا بكل ما هو ملموس ومحسوب وظاهر. لقبه شركاؤه بـ"هومو فابير" (الإنسان الصانع) لما فيه من تفانٍ تجاه عالم التكنولوجيا والأرقام. ويدفع فابير ثمن هذا التفاني، إذ يقع إثر رحلة قام بها إلى جنوبي أمريكا تحت وطأة ما يسمى "بظاهرة التعب" ليفقد كل صلة بأرض الواقع فلا يكل ولا يرتاح إلا عندما يشعر بالشوق إلى نيويورك وإلى حبيبته الأمريكية، ولذا يعود فابير على متن سفينة أوروبية يهب فيها قلبه ومشاعره لفتاة يجهل سبب تعلقه الشديد بها. فيسافران معاً إلى فرنسا وإيطاليا ويحطان الرحال في اليونان حيث يلعب القدر لعبته بمرارة ويزيل عن بصر الرجل الأعمى وبصيرته النقاب. هي ذي فحوى قصيدة منثورة نسجت بعيداً عن الوجدانيات والمشاعر، تسلط الضوء على عبثية القدر في رواية تحكي الوحدة والحب واليأس.
