وجد المرتضى العالم الدمشقي أن من حق ملوك الأيوبيين عليه تدوين كتاب يذكر أنسابهم وألقابهم... ذلك أن عصرهم كان من أزهى عصور دمشق، لما كان لهم في تاريخ الإسلام شأن عظيم. لذلك عني بوضع هذه الرسالة النفسية المسماة "ترويج القلوب في ذكر الملوك بني أيوب" والتي تبحث في أنساب الملوك الأيوبيين، وفيها يجمع المصنف بين العناية بالإنسان والعناية بالحديث، حيث أنه يتحدث فيها عن نسب ملوك بني أيوب ذاكراً أولادهم وألقابهم وكناهم ووفياتهم، وما لهم من مسموعات على المحدثين، ومرجعه في كل ما ذكر كتب التواريخ والأجزاء الحديثية ومعاجم الشيوخ.
هذا وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً حيث تجلى المحقق بـ أولاً: ذكر ترجمة صغيرة لكل من ذكر المرتضى مذيلة بالمصادر التي تكلمت عنه، ثانياً: تقسيم النص بعنونات صغيرة ليسهل إدراك مضمونه. ثالثاً: إلحاق الرسالة بملاحق لمن غفل المرتضى عن ذكرهم من الأيوبيين، ولبعض السماعات الحديثية التي وجدها المحقق. وتضمنت أسماء بعض الملوك والعلماء الأيوبيين، رابعاً: وضع فهارس مختلفة (منها لأسماء الكتب الواردة في نص الزبيدي، وآخر للأماكن والإعلام...).
