المصطلح هو ما اتفق حوله فريق من الناس أو من العلماء واصطلحوا عليه ليدل على معنى خاص عندهم. ونظراً لما يقع من اختلافات في تحديد مدلول المصطلح المشترك، فإن الوقوف على واقع المصطلحات وفهم ما يراد بها يقتضي تتبعها بعناية وفهمها بروية.
وفي هذا الكتاب يعرض المؤلف لأصول علم الحديث حيث يقرر أن علوم الحديث تحتاج إلى جانب ضبط مصطلحاتها إلى تتويج كل نوع منها بخلاصة خالصة من شوائب الاختلافات والتعارضات. ولذلك فهو يقدم جملة من الأمثلة الدقيقة لكل نوع من أنواع علوم الحديث حتى تكون تطبيقاً عملياً واضحاً لما وضعه العلماء من اصطلاحات.
كما يعرض المؤلف لملامح من مناهج المحدثين في النقد والتمحيص. و يتناول بالبحث أيضاً موضوع (موضوع الحديث) مبنياً أن العلماء (المسلمين هم الذين اكتشفوا الوضع ووقفوا على الموضوعات، وعزوا الوضاعين وهزموهم، كما ذهب إلى أن الأحاديث الموضوعة لا صلة لها بحديث الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم الذي جمعه علماء الأمة في الكتب الصحاح ودواوين السنة المعتبرة. كما يبين أن العلماء المسلمين نقدوا الحديث سنداً ومتناً وليس صحيحاً ما أدعاه بعضهم من أن عناية المسلمين إنما اتجهت نحو النقد الخارجي أي نقد السند وقد وضعوا بالإضافة إلى ذلك علم الجرح والتعديل الذي تعتبر قواعده وأصوله من أبق مناهج البحث العلمي التي توصل إليها حتى اليوم.
