إن الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا من تأليف المفضل بن سعد بن الحسين المافروخي الأصفهاني وهو من الكتاب المغمورين الذي لم تترجم لهم كتب التراجم وكتب الأدب سيما وأنه من علماء وأدباء القرن الخامس الهجري، وكتابه هذا يتحدث فيه عن محاسن بلده أصفهان، وهو أشبه بالرسالة القصيرة ولكنه يحشد فيه عشرات الشعراء المعروفين والمغمورين.
وتكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب بأنه أُلّف باللغة العربية وترجم إلى الفارسية، والإنكليزية والفرنسية، كما أن هذا الكتاب ضم الكثير الكثير من الشعراء المشهورين، بالإضافة إلى أخبار الدقيقة، والأوصاف النادرة لأصفهان، كما حوى أكثر من 700 بيت من الشعر، والشعراء ممن لم يترجم لهم في كتب الأدب، وكتب التراجم.
بالإضافة إلى هذا كله حشد المؤلف في الكتاب أسماء العشرات من المشايخ، والقضاة، والأدباء، والعلماء الذين ندَّت كتب الأدب، والتاريخ عن ذكر أسمائهم.
