يهدف هذا الكتاب لتقديم مادة علمية للقارئ العادي وغير المتخصص في الزراعة، وذلك لإعانته على التعرف على قضايا واهتمامات العلوم الزراعية وكذلك الاطلاع على السمات العامة للوضع الزراعي بالأقطار العربية بصفة عامة والسودان بصفة خاصة. هذا ويندرج الكتاب في طرحه لعلم الزراعة من التعريف بعلم الزراعة ومراحل تطور الزراعة منذ استئناس المحاصيل إلى أن وصل النشاط الزراعي إلى ما هو عليه الآن في السودان، ثم ينتقل بعد ذلك لتعريف الطالب بالعلوم الزراعية المتعددة والمتكاملة، ثم يتناول علاقة البيئة بنمو وتوزيع المحاصيل في العالم.
وفي هذا السياق يشير الكتاب إلى العوامل البيئية والمناخية بالوطن العربي والآثار المترتبة عليها، حيث تتناول أبواب كتاب الموارد الزراعية بالوطن العربي والسمات العامة للزراعة العربية مدعمة بالإحصائيات المتوفرة من التقارير السنوية للمنظمة العربية للتنمية الزراعية، خصص الباب الأخير للنشاط الزراعي لجمهورية السودان، وذلك لتميز السودان عن غيره من الأقطار العربية والأفريقية من ناحية المساحة، حيث أنه يعد أكبر الأقطار العربية والأفريقية مساحة، وكذلك لتوفر الموارد المائية، وكذلك لتوفر الإمكانات والموارد الطبيعية به والتي تؤهله للمساهمة بقدر وافر من الأمن الغذائي بالقارة الأفريقية والوطن العربي.
