يتضمن الكتاب تعريفاً بماهية الجغرافية الحيوية وأسس تصنيف الأحياء كما يشمل عرضاً تاريخياً لتطور الأحياء وعلاقة هذا التطور بالتطور العام الذي عرفته الأرض خلال تاريخها، ومدى تأثير هذا التطور التاريخي على نشأة الأحياء وتوزيعها. ولهذا كان لا بد من التعرف على مجمل العوامل المؤثرة على انتشار الأحياء وتكاثرها، وبشكل خاص على التربة؛ وتوزيعها، وعوامل تكوينها وتحسين شروطها وحمايتها من التعرية؛ ولقد تم التركيز على دراسة الأقاليم النباتية والحيوانية وعلى الأنواع المنتشرة في كل إقليم. ونظراً لما تشكله المسطحات المائية ن دور في تطور وانتشار الأحياء على الأرض فلقد تمّ تخصيص فصل خاص للتعرّف على الأحياء البحرية وكيفية توزيعها في المحيطات. ونظراً لأهمية العلاقة بين الموقع الجغرافي والصفات الجيوكيميائية للتربة فقد جرى دراسة الترابط بين التربة والمياه والأحياء
ويشكل الكتاب مصدراً خصباً للمهتمين بالأحياء وتوزيعها خاصة الجغرافيين وكل من يهتم بالبيئة.
