فرانكشتاين رواية حملت في ظاهرها قصة رعب متزايد، غير أنها في أعماقها تلقى أنواراً كاشفة على الأوضاع البشرية، بتصوير حال عالم يتخطى حدود التزامات ما يمليه العقل والضمير فيتورط في صراع مر لما جنت يداه في خلق وحش بشع، جاء إلى الحياة في عالم غريب، فصار كل من العالم والوحش يسعى إلى الخلاص من الوضع المروع نفسه الذي وجدا نفسيهما منه.
رواية فرانكشتاين هي الأم الحقيقية لرواية الخيال العلمي.
وظلت هذه الرواية تسحر القراء أكثر من قرن ونصف القرن، وحولت إلى فيلم سينمائي، وهي تشد انتباه القراء والمشاهدين وتحبس أنفاسهم لمتابعة أحداث الرواية بين الوحش الذي لا اسم له وصانعه فرانكشتاين، وهم موزعون بين العطف على الوحش والرعب منه والشفقة على العالم الذي أوجده ولم يستطع تربيته والسيطرة عليه وتطمين احتياجاته الحياتية والعاطفية، وظل الاثنان في صراع دائم إلى نهاية الرواية، حتى تصل الشفقة أحياناً حد اللوم والكراهية على من تسبب في وجوده غير الطبيعي.
