الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا ليس مجرد سيرة حياة مصورة، بل عرض للمصادر الفكرية والسياسية التي ساهمت في تشكيل وعي الرجل. كما هو عرضٌ لنتاجات هذا الوعي على الصعيدين العلمي والسياسي.
يغطي الفصل الأول مرحلة الصبا، والبيئة التي احتك تشومسكي من خلالها بالقراءة والدراسة والالتزام. بينما يصف الفصل الثاني عمله كطالب جامعي، وعلاقته بـ"زليغ هاريس".
أما الفصل الثالث فيستكشف أساس العقلانية الديكارتية وتأثيرها على إسهاماته في اللسانيات والتفكير السياسي. يؤكد الفصل الرابع على حياته المهنية الجامعية، إنجازاته ومشاريعه، ويلخص أفكاره عن دور المثقف في المجتمع المعاصر، وعلاقة الفرد بالمؤسسة.
أما الفصل الخامس فيشير إلى دوره كصوت معارض ضمن المشهد السياسي الأمريكي، آخذاً بعين الاعتبار النضالات المختلفة التي انخرط فيها، وبعض طرق التفكير الجديدة التي كانت تمد جذورها من حوله، أذكر منها بشكل خاص ما بعد الحداثة. خاتمة الكتاب تدرس العلاقات بين عمل تشومسكي الحالي والمشهد السياسي والاجتماعي الذي يخاطبه هذا العمل ويتوجه إليه.
تميل محاولات تشومسكي الفكرية والسياسية نحو التراكب والتشابك في نقاط اتصال متعددة بينها، سوف تظهر تدريجياً بقراءة هذه السيرة، كما سيظهر لنا العنصر المشترك الذي يوحد بين اهتماماته المتنوعة، ألا وهو تحلي تشومسكي بصرامة متميزة، وحس بالمسؤولية، وتوق جارف لمتابعة هذه الاهتمامات.
