لقد صعد الإسلام في زمن كانت فيه الإمبراطورية الرومانية الشرقية والإمبراطورية الفارسية على وشك السقوط وكانت في الغرب الإمبراطورية الغربية الجديدة؛ إمبراطورية الفرانكن، قد بدأت في النهوض.
قبل ظهور النبي محمد كانت شبه الجزيرة العربية، التي كانت قد شهدت في الجنوب والشمال الغربي منذ ألف عام على الأقل حضارات مزدهرة من الفكر "السومري" قد دخلت في مرحلة السقوط العالمي العام، وكانت مدينة مكة "أم القرى" في شبه الجزيرة العربية، هي الزمن القديم أحد المراكز العربية للحركة التجارية، محمَّد لم يخرج العرب، كما افترض الغرب خطأ قبل الإكتشافات الأثرية الهائلة، من أوضاع بدائية مختلفة بل إنَّه مثل خلفائه من بعد قد بعثوا بالدين الإسلامي الفكر الشرقي القديم من جديد.
لقد كان هناك في مكة قبل الإسلام من يسمون "الأحناف" الذين كانوا يمثلون تقوى عربية عميقة ويرفضون عبادة الأصنام المتحجرة ويتبعون طريقة صوفية للتقرب من الله تعالى، وكلمة "حنيف" التي قد تكون سورية (سريانية) تعني "وثني" (ولربما منشق) لكن المسيحيين السريان كانوا يستعملونها بالمعنى "الوثني التقي"، ثم أصبحت فيما بعد تستعمل بمعنى "التقي".
إنطلاقاً من زاوية شبه الجزيرة العربية وجه الإسلام بعد وفاة النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ضربة قاضية لعالم الدين الفارسي، ودحر المسيحية المتجمدة من آسيا وأفريقيا، وطرد البوذية من أجزا كبيرة في الهند وآسيا الوسطى، وفي شرق آسيا أسس عبر الصين واليابان جاليات إسلامية كبيرة دون أن يقوم بأي دعوة تبشيرية منظمة، وكسب إلى جانبه جزءاً من شعوب أفريقيا السوداء، الملايين من البشر يصلّون كل يوم خمس مرات باللغة العربية تعبيراً عن إعتناقهم للدين الإسلامي.
