إن هذا السفر هو قراءة في أوراق أحد أعلام العراق (هاني بن عبد الرحمن آل الجراح الطائي) من كتب لمرحلة مهمة من تاريخ المماليك في العراق وما صاحبها من أحداث منذ منتصف القرن الثامن عشر الميلادي ولغاية منتصف القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي والتي غفل تاريخ العراق المعاصر عن سرد أغلب وقائعها وشخوصها وأن تعرض لأبرز أحداثها بصورة مجملة.
أما هذه الأوراق فقد تطرقت إلى أمور تفصيلية عن الحوادث التي غفل هذا التاريخ عن تسجيلها ولهذا السبب تعطي هذه الأوراق صورة عن أغلب الأحداث والأشخاص البارزين في هذه الحقبة التاريخية المهمة والتي قررت مصير العراق وشعبه لمدة تقارب قرناً من الزمن.
ومن خلال البحث والتقصي عن أخبار هذه الأوراق التي تبرز بوضوح تطلع العراقيين إلى الاستقلال التام عن الدولة العثمانية، فقدموا التضحيات في سبيل هذه الغاية النبيلة التي كادت أن تتحقق لولا معاكسة الأقدار إذ لم يتهيأ لهم القائد الفذ الذي كان باستطاعته أن يمضي بهم قدماً لتحقيق هذه الغاية.
فالأوراق هذه حياة كاملة وحقيقية لأشخاص عاشوا ومارسوا حياتهم وتزوجوا وأنجبوا وإن قسماً من أبنائهم لا يزال يعيش في البيئة والأماكن نفسها التي عاش فيها آباؤهم وأجدادهم.
