"بعد منتصف الليل، بينما خلدت "افلين" وزوجها للنوم، وخرجت ريما مع الهادي في نزهة على رمال الشاطئ المبللة برطوبة المساء، اقتربت نور من نجم الذي كان يجهد لمتابعة خيال العاشقين الجدد وقالت: ما رأيك بغطسة ليلية؟ ماذا؟ غطسة منتصف الليل! أنت لست جادة بالتأكيد! ثم استدار وأضاف دون أن ينظر إليها: أنا ذاهب للنوم. الأفضل أن تنامي أنت أيضاً. أجل سأنام. ما إن لفتها وحدة المكان حتى أصبح نداء البحر أكثر رتابة وإلحاحاً. نزلت الدرج المؤدي إلى الشاطئ، وراحت تنصت إلى وقع أقدامها على الرمال المثقلة بذرات الماء الذي كان ينتقل أهازيجاً بحرية تنفذ عبر مسامها وتعلق برطوبة الهواء. رأت من بعيد خيال ريما والهادي متعانقين. وصلتها ابتسامة قلبها مع أول موجة خائرة ارتطمت بقدميها وتساءلت هل السمك فعلاً لا يبالي".
تجربة عاطفية تتداخل في ثناياها قضايا اجتماعية ودينية تطرحها الكاتبة من خلال شخصياتها المحورية، نور، ماري أو مريم المسيحية الجزائرية التي أشهرت إسلامها وابنتها ريما والتي أصبحت صديقة نور الحميمة. وكان للأهل والبيئة في طروحات الكاتبة الشيء الكثير إذ أنها شكلت الخلفية التي انطلقت منها الكاتبة لتغذي مناخات القصة التي كان مسرح أحداثها دمشق بيروت الجزائر. تسير أحداث القصة برويّة، وتخللها تلميحات وإشارات نقدية استهدفت الواقع الاجتماعي والفكري في الآن نفسه.
