لقد رفع الله سبحانه بالعلم أقواماً من الشيعة فجعلهم بالعلم قادة، وفي تأسيس فنون الإسلام سادة، حيث تقدموا في تأسيس فنون العلم في الصدر الأول فأحببت التنبيه على ذلك بإفراد مصنف في ذلك، أداءً لحق أُولئك الكرام، الحائزين قصب السبق في هذا المقام.
ورتّبته على أربعة عشر فصلاً تجمع العلوم التي تقدمت الشيعة في تأسيسها، وعقدت لكل فصل ثلاث صحائف، الأولى في واضع ذلك العلم ومؤسسه، والثانية في أول من صنف فيه منهم بعد الواضع أو نقحه تنقيحاً يجري مجرى التأسيس، والثالث في بعض مشاهير أئمة ذلك العلم من الشيعة المتقدمين من أهل المائة الأولى إلى السابعة دون المتأخرين عنهم لئلا يطول الكتاب، ويخرج عن القصد الذي نرمي إليه، ومع ذلك فهو جامع للمؤسسين لكل علوم الإسلام، ولأربع عشرة طائفة من مشاهير كل علم من طوائف العلماء والأعلام المصنّفين في علم النحو والصرف، واللغة والمعاني والبيان والبديع، والعروض والشعر، والسير، والتواريخ الإسلامية، وعلم الرجال، وأحوال الرواة، وعلم الفرق والأديان، وعلم الحديث، وعلم الدراية، وعلم الفقه وأصول الفقه، وعلوم القرآن الكريم، وعلم الكلام والعقائد، وعلم الأخلاق.
