في هذا العمل يرسم "خليفة العريفي" من البحرين مجموعة من اللوحات الشخصية عبر اقترابه من الخاص الفردي في مواجهة بني السلطة التقليدية لمجتمعه هي قصص قصيرة تضمها رواية عبارة عن مشاهدات ورؤى وأحلام وانطباعات وحوادث صغيرة، لا تعتمد حبكة مقروءة ظاهرة، بل إيقاعاً يتكرر فيشكل الحجر الأساس في بنائها. شخصيات العمل متأرجحة بين الصدى ورجع الصدى في فضاء لا نهاية له. هي دوامة تقود إلى المجهول، والمجهول في هذا العمل، غياهب السجون، وحتى إذا خرج الإنسان فيها يبقى في نفس الدائرة هذا ما أراد الروائي التعبير عنه "خرجت وليتني لم أخرج، كنت أعتقد أنني سأكون أكثر فائدة وأنا في الخارج"، فخرجت بعهد... فنبذني أصدقائي، وهجرتني زوجتي، ولم يعد لي مكان ألجأ أليه، عاطل عن العمل، لا أملك ما أقتات به، من سيوظف شخصاً له ماضٍ سياسي وخرج من المعتقل بكفالة المخابرات؟...".
تأتي أعمال "خليفة العريفي" حصيلة نوع من النظر النقدي، المستند إلى خلفية معرفية نظرية وممارسة تطبيقية في مقاربة النص الروائي. وهذا النوع ينطلق من النص نفسه، ويحاول أن يتعرَى ما ينطوي عليه أو يشي به، من دلالات ومحمولات وإشارات، سواء على مستوى الحكاية أو الخطاب، من هنا يأتي هذا العمل محاولة للكشف عما يختلج الذات الفردية والجمعية العربية من هواجس ألهبتها روح التغيير المتجذرة عبر تاريخ نضالي طويل أراد الكاتب أن يكون مساهمة في نسج وجهات نظر ورؤية خاصة للمجتمعي عبر عنها بواسطة تقنية الكتابة.
